Noteworthy weather today
significant newsworthy major

The start of the first significant rain event for much of the continent shows up in these upper air charts for 10pm EST tonight. above shows the situation in the lower atmosphere at 850hPa (about 1.3km up) where very warm air for July is sweeping down from northern AUS while a cold airmass moves into the southern states in the wake of the frontal system visible on the surface charts.

Chart below shows the amount of moisture in the atmosphere available for precipitation. Much of the continent is dry, with only 10 to 15mm of moisture available in the air column above any given place. This has been a common situation over the past few months, with the low humidity leading to widespread cold nights. However, a tongue of moisture, the harbinger of a rain event from the northwest, can be seen crossing the northern WA coast. Moisture levels are also high over most of northern AUS, and the northerly winds shown in are driving this moisture inland.

Chart shows the well-developed jet stream responsible for the northwest rainband. Wind speeds at its core over SA are approaching 350km/h. COLA
