Noteworthy weather today
significant newsworthy major

WA, VIC, TAS: Warm in the south. Warm northerly winds ahead of an advancing cold front gave most of southern WA top temperatures 4 to 8 above normal today, and set records in the warmest areas. Carnamah, Northam and Cape Naturaliste either equalled or set new July highs, and all three locations have 40 to 50 year climatic histories. Earlier this morning, much of VIC and TAS experienced unusually warm minimum temperatures with readings in southern TAS up to 8 above average. These were caused by windy conditions and the movement into the area of warmer, moister air from the west and northwest. Even Mount Wellington summit, where wind gusted to 131km/h at 4am, recorded a relatively balmy minimum of +0.2 while its maximum of 5.1 was the warmest since 9 June.
