Noteworthy weather today
significant newsworthy major
The eye of category 4 TC Larry is well-defined as the cyclone passes south of Willis Island at 4.10pm EST today.

QLD: TC Larry approaches FNQ coast

Tropical Cyclone Larry moved to a position 240km east of Innisfail at 10pm. The cyclone, which had been moving steadily west towards the Far North Queensland coast at about 25km/h, had a central pressure of 925hPa and was rated category 4. From early evening, the Bureau of Meteorology warnings indicated that the core would cross the coast between Innisfail and Mission Beach between 7 and 9am Monday, a forecast that proved accurate (see full story in DWS 20 March 2006). By late evening, wind gusts up to 98km/h were being experienced on Hamilton Island east of Proserpine, and it was estimated the cyclone would strengthen to category 5 with wind gusts of 280km/h on landfall, making it the most powerful cyclone to hit the QLD east coast in decades.

In response to the warnings, evacuation centres were set up between Innisfail and Ingham. Hundreds of people voluntarily evacuated coastal homes and an official disaster declaration gave authorities the power to legally enforce evacuation if necessary. Service stations reported a steady stream of cars leaving the warning area. Some older hospitals not built to cyclone standards were evacuated as were tourist resorts on Dunk and Bedarra Islands, SE of Mission Beach. Cairns and Townsville airports were closed and all flights in the area cancelled. Ports were closed, with large vessels putting to sea and small craft moving to cyclone mooring points. Large queues were reported at petrol stations and supermarkets. Disaster response teams, thousands of sandbags, and Australian Defence Forces Black Hawk helicopters were being positioned to provide assistance when needed.

NT, QLD: Cold, wet weather spreads west into the Top End

The cloudmass associated with a weakening monsoon low over the NT Top End spread westwards today bringing exceptionally cool conditions for March to a large area in the Territory's central north (see map). Maximum temperatures were 6 to 10 below average, with Kidman Springs, 240km SW of Katherine, setting a record low March maximum of 26.1, 2.5 below its previous record in 10 years. Continued heavy rain, unusual for this end of the wet season, has continued over the southern Gulf and into the Roper catchment in the NT (see wettest.)
