Noteworthy weather today
significant newsworthy major

QLD, NSW: Thunderstorms, widespread rain saturate the inland. The trough responsible for flooding on the NSW Mid North Coast has also generated widespread thunderstorms and areas of heavy rain across central and southern inland QLD and northern inland NSW both yesterday and today. In the 24 hours to 9am yesterday, the heaviest falls were in the NSW northern and central plains, with Bellata PO reporting 74.0mm and Girilambone (Wongala) 58.4mm (an October record). Further records fell in the 24 hours to 9 today with reports of 53.2mm at Coonamble Airport on the NSW Central Western Plains, 45.2 at South Plains and 42.8 at Wallen (QLD Warrego) and 75.0 at Eastmere (QLD Central West).

WA: Temperature records fall in the SE. A belt of hot air ducted down from the tropics ahead of a trough gave record high temperatures in the state's southeast. Balladonia, on the edge of the Nullarbor Plain, set new records for both high minimum and maximum temperatures today with its low of 20.9 and high of 41.6 both October records in over 40 years climatic history. Kalgoorlie-Boulder Airport, with 69 years of observations, shaved 1.6 off its previous record October high minimum with a reading of 25.7. Full details of records are below.

International Events

PHILIPPINES: Fourth typhoon in a month threatens. Typhoon Mirinae, packing sustained winds estimated at 140km/h, was forecast to increase its speed of movement before hitting the main island of Luzon on Saturday. The storm is the 23rd of the season and the fourth to impact on the nation. Since the end of September, 929 people perished in Typhoons Ketsana and Parma while Typhoon Lupit veered north of the Philippines before making landfall. Parts of Manila and outlying areas remain flooded after Ketsana dropped record rain on the city. The waterlogged conditions are expected to continue into the New Year, with over a million people exposed to the risk of disease. The death toll of 929 does not include a further 167 that have since died of leptospirosis. Millions of doses of antibiotics have been handed out to contain the disease, but Adam Craig, a spokesman for the World Health Organisation, warned the threat of it spreading would remain as long as the stagnant water remained.
