QLD, NSW, VIC: Widespread storms bring heavy falls. A deep trough extending down from SW QLD into western NSW and VIC continues to drag warm, moist and unstable tropical air into the three states generating widespread thunderstorms and heavy showers. Because steering winds are light, the storms are slow-moving and some scattered high rainfall totals have been reported, including 47mm in 3 hours to 9am at Broken Hill and 25.8mm in 96 minutes at Parkes NSW. Heavy cloud kept maximum temperatures around Broken Hill up to 12 below average. Storms and continuing rain gave Balranald in the western Riverina 51mm in the 24 hours to 9am. A fierce storm dumped 35mm in Gloucester NSW, and cut power to parts of the town and neighbouring Barrington for several hours.

A downpour in Ballarat VIC dumped 35.8mm between 5.40 and 8pm, 17mm of which fell in 8 minutes just before 6pm, inundating about 25 houses and overwhelming the city's drainage system. The Sovereign Hill Gold Museum was damaged and there were 66 emergency callouts. A storm took out TV transmitters atop Mt William in the Grampians, resulting in loss of signal between 6 and 9pm to thousands of viewers. Useful rain helped dampen fires in Victoria's Gippsland, but also made backburning operations difficult -- 9 fires are still listed as out of control across Victoria, with the Great Divide fire in the north-east which has burnt through 3470 square kilometres the largest. In Sydney's west, a line of showers dumped 51mm at Wilmot between 11am and 1pm and 59mm at Warragamba Dam between 10am and 1pm. (See wettest and downpours for more reports.)
