Noteworthy weather today
significant newsworthy major

WA: Tropical Cyclone Isobel heads for the north coast. The Perth Tropical Cyclone Warning Centre declared the first cyclone of the season at 4pm today when category 1 Isobel dropped to a central pressure of 988hPa. A tropical low formed into the cyclone 600km north of Port Hedland and was moving south at 22km/h.

QLD, NSW: Trough brings storms and an unusually cold day. A trough lying through western QLD and NSW gave widely scattered storms and heavy rain (see downpours) with a wind gust of 91km/h at Winton QLD. Longreach Airport reported its windiest January day in 11 years with an average speed of 28.2km/h over the 24 hours to 9am Wednesday (see Wednesday's records). In NW NSW, persistent cloud cover gave Brewarrina and surrounds an exceptionally cold January day, the town's maximum of 21.6 some 14.6 below average.

WA: Cold in the South West. Cloud, and a cold airmass moving in, kept daytime temperatures well below normal in WA's South West today, with Bunbury recording its lowest January maximum temperature in 12 years (see records and coldest).
