WA, NT, QLD: Cold wet weather returns. A mid-upper level trough redeveloped across northern AUS overnight, dragging moisture south over the continent from areas of thunderstorms over Indonesia, Papua New Guinea and the Timor Sea. In addition, a pair of troughs extended SE into inland QLD, extending middle and high level cloud and rain across much of the state. The rain and lack of sunshine (see the solar radiation map below) kept daytime temperatures 6 to 13 below average in a broad band from the WA Kimberley to central southern QLD. Gove Airport in NE Arnhemland, recorded its lowest maximum temperature in 31 years with a top of just 22.2, while nearby Alyangula on Groote Eylandt's top of 21.5 was its lowest for June in 25 years.

Heavy overnight rain in the North Kimberley set new June records, in some cases more than doubling old ones (see records). Wyndham and Theda (60km SSW of Kalumburu) both received over 50mm, around twice their previous records in 40 year histories. Steady moderate rain fell over most of inland QLD from this morning overnight into Tuesday giving a huge area totals of between 25 and 50mm in the 24 hours to 9am (see map) with 50.8mm recorded at Blackall.

The almost unprecedented cold wet weather in the northern dry season has farmers expecting losses and wondering how to handle novel situations. Melon farmers in the Ord area of the WA Kimberley have received over 100mm over the past week at peak picking season. Kirsten Stoldt of Bluey's Outback Farm told ABC Radio "Some of [the melons] are really heavy, so they seem to be waterlogged. [But] there's no water inside but you just don't know what to expect, because we haven't had this before. We're actually scared of the sun coming out in full force and we don't know how the plants will react to that, we've just got no idea because we've never had this before."

Across the continent in the sugar pruducing region between Townsville and Cairns, it is peak cane harvesting season, but although the mills have been ready for the past two weeks, the ground is too waterlogged to take harvesters. North QLD fruit and vegetables have also been affected, with fungus, slow growth and ripening, and problems with fruit setting cutting current and future harvests that normally supply much of the nation. Some fruit and vegetable prices are expected to quadruple. Farmers in southern QLD are facing stock and crop losses, with soil temperatures as low as -4 and drying winds stalling germination in winter crops and feed.
