Noteworthy weather today
significant newsworthy major

NT, QLD: Unseasonably cold and wet in the north. Rain and temperatures have been highly unusual for parts of the NT and tropical QLD for June. A number of locations have had more rain in the past day or two than they have previously recorded in any June or any winter. The culprit is the heavy cloud mass visible in the satellite images below, the result of widespread lifting caused by a middle-atmosphere trough. This led to some unprecedented rainfall in the QLD Gulf Country and across the NT Top End today and into the early hours of Monday, while thick cloud resulted in some locations having record or near-record cold days.

Though most of the rain fell today, it is counted in the 24-hour period to 9am Monday, so full details of rainfall records set are in Monday's DWS. The following, however, deserve special mention:

  • In the NT, Oenpelli recorded 71.4mm in the 24 hours to 9am Monday, smashing its previous daily record of 31.8 set back in 1933. The station has 95 years of observations. 71.4mm is more than has ever been recorded in an entire winter season. All or most of the rain fell overnight into Monday.
  • In QLD, Mt Isa AP, with an average June rainfall of 3.9mm, recorded 56.2mm in the 24 hours to 9am Monday. Falls of 11.4mm yesterday and 13.0mm back on 6 June bring the city's total for June so far to 80.8mm. The previous record daily rainfall for June was 28.4mm and the previous monthly June record was 29mm in a 40-year history. The raingauge at Mt Isa Mines recorded 65.4mm, its heaviest daily June fall in 73 years.
  • Also in QLD, Toorak and Moranbah have broken June monthly records with the month only half done. Toorak's total of 122mm eclipses the previous monthly record of 85 set in 1985, while Moranbah's 81mm to date exceeds its previous monthly record of 55mm.

Many of the heavy totals were accumulated in just a few hours. Cloncurry AP recorded 46mm in 4 hours and Camooweal was doused with 23mm in one 3-hour period then 26mm in another (see downpours).

Urandangie recorded its coldest June day in a 50-year history today, while in Alice Springs the mercury only got to 8.3, its lowest for any month since 1968 and its lowest for June since 1956.

NSW: Torrential rain on Lord Howe Island. A thunderstorm dumped 83mm on Lord Howe Island AP in just over an hour mid-afternoon. 52.4mm fell in 24 minutes to 2pm. The storm total was 88.6mm and the highest wind gust 109km/h.
