Below: Weatherzone temperature graph for Camden Airport this morning.

NSW: Thar she blows -- temperature soars as inversion implodes

A classic temperature inversion blow-out occurred over parts of Sydney and eastern NSW this morning. The temperature graph for Camden Airport at left shows that the temperature suddenly soared from 5.7 to 15.7 between 8.00am and 8.18am, leveling off at 17.4 at 8.30 and 18.6 at 8.45am. Similar sudden temperature rises, though not so dramatic, were recorded elsewhere in Sydney's west and southwest, and at a few inland locations such as Goulburn where the thermometer jumped from 8 to 11.1 just after 5.30am.

Before the sudden temperature rise, the Sydney basin and sheltered inland valleys had cooled fairly normally overnight, forming a temperature inversion in the lowest few hundred metres above the surface. This can be seen on the right-hand blue trace above, which represents the temperature measured by the radiosonde balloon released at Sydney Airport at 6 this morning, before the temperature rise. (The right-hand red line shows the temperature measured by the balloon ascent at 3 this afternoon, which falls more normally with height.)

Temperature inversions like these usually offer quite smooth upper surfaces to the sky, so that stronger upper winds can slide over them without breaking into them. It was this phenomenon that allowed damaging gale force winds to slide over the top of Sydney two weeks ago in the "Storm in a Tea Cup" storm. However, the smooth upper surface of the inversion can only take so much wind drag before it weakens, and when this happens it can implode suddenly and dramatically.

A rapid strengthing of low-level winds moved in from the west before dawn. At 3am, winds about 300m above Sydney Airport were blowing at 30km/h, while by 6am they had doubled their speed to 60km/h. Wind at Camden Airport up to 8am had been between calm and 5km/h. Above the airport, however, the top of the inversion would have developed waves of progressively greater amplitude as the winds increased until the whole inversion was blown apart. By 8.45am the surface wind was averaging 30km/h and gusting to 50km/h from the NW.
