Noteworthy weather today
significant newsworthy major

NSW: Cold and stormy in the NE. Heavy cloud cover following overnight thunderstorms made for an unusually cool day in NE NSW. Murwillumbah had its equally coldest January day in 34 years, and at Casino, with only a 13-year history, it was the coolest January day on record.

WA, NT, QLD: Monsoonal storms and showers in the north. Rainfall totals were heavier across the far north today as the monsoon trough crossed the coast, moving into the WA Kimberley and the NT Top End. A second trough extending from the monsoon low SW of Darwin across the NT into western QLD also produced thunderstorms and some heavy falls. See wettest, downpours and today's noteworthy observations for details.
