VIC: Gippsland Lakes flood last for days

This event, the aftermath of Wednesday's extreme rainfall and yesterday's major river flooding, will be reviewed when the event has completed.

WA, NT, QLD: Now it's record cold nights

After spending a week through the middle of June setting new cold daytime temperature records across a huge area of the tropics, WA, NT and QLD notched up record cold nights this morning with most of tropical AUS experiencing overnight lows 6 to 11 below average (see charts). Cold air moving northwest from SE AUS over the past few days has moved in under a strong, stable high pressure system that covers the northern two-thirds of the continent. Mandora, 5km back from Eighty Mile Beach on the NW coast of WA, recorded a minimum of 1.5, nearly 2C colder than any June temperature recorded in 44 years. In the Territory, Maningrida's low of 9.7 was its lowest for June in 40 years, while in QLD, Weipa's 10.2 was 1.6 below its previous lowest ever recorded in 16 years. Atherton's minimum of -0.6 was also that station's lowest ever in 14 years, and its first sub-zero recording in June. Details in records.
