Noteworthy weather today
significant newsworthy major

WA, NT, QLD: Extreme cold and wet "dry" season in the north. See story 19 June.

NSW, VIC, TAS: Cold weather continues as winds ease. Although strong southerly winds abated today as a high pressure system moved into SE AUS, temperatures remained below normal. Even relatively clear skies failed to warm the entrenched cold airmass with four locations around Adelaide -- Kingscote, Strathalbyn, Parawa and Nuriootpa -- recording their coldest June days in over a decade. Overnight, temperature records were set in NSW, VIC and TAS. The low of -0.4 at Eddystone Point, right beside the water on Tasmania's northeastern tip, was the first sub-zero temperature reported there in 50 years. Griffith's -4.0 was the town's coldest June night in 34 years. Widespread fogs occurred across NSW west of the Divide.

WA: Strong cold front bring wind, rain and dust. The Eneabba observer summed up the cold front moving into WA this afternoon when he added to his 3pm weather report "dust mud, sticks, stones ... red dust storm, gusty winds". Wind gusted to 113km/h at Rottnest Island at 3.30pm, and raised dust in the Central West and West Gascoyne. The front ushered in a windy weekend of heavy coastal showers and storms that brought 25 to 100mm of rain to southwestern coastal parts, but produced little effective rain farther inland (see further story Sunday 24 June).
