TAS, VIC, NSW: Cold blast enters the southeast. The strong high pressure system under the Bight shown on the surface charts below extended a ridge to the SE today, bringing a flood of cold southern air into SE AUS. TAS, where the night was still and calm, was first to feel its effects with widespread severe frosts. Hobart City's low of -0.4 was its lowest since the same temperature was recorded in June 1998, while Scottsdale and Wynyard in the north set new June records. Bushy Park in the Derwent Valley recorded -6.0, its lowest since the record -6.7 in June 1972. The coldest place was Liawenee on the Central Plateau at -8.8. Ice formed on many roads including the Midland Highway at Spring Hill, the Huon Highway at South Hobart and Main Road Granton at Ten Mile Hill. Hobart went on to experience its chilliest day in 2 years with a top of only 7.4 while snow fell as low as 300m and hail was reported around the south coast.

The cold air moved into VIC during the morning bringing hail showers and a bitterly cold day. Hamilton AP's top of 7.1 was its lowest for June in 22 years of record, while Mt Nowa Nowa in East Gippsland and Pt Wilson near Geelong also set records. Snow level lowered to 700m during the afternoon, though the dry air produced little snow. Thick ice formed on the Western Highway near Gordon and the Midlands Highway near Daylesford.

In NSW, the far southeast and Snowy Mountains were first to feel the impact, with Bombala AWS only reaching a top of 4.7C, another record. Snow began falling in Thredbo Village around 9am with about 10cm accumulating by 3pm. Snow also settled east of the Snowies mid-afternoon with Berridale (820m asl) reporting "flakes the size of 50c pieces" building up to 5cm depth and snow covering Jindabyne (900m asl) to lake level. The main Cooma-Kosciuszko road was closed after two school buses ran off it in snow and ice. Snow was also reported at Dalgety, Delegate and other parts of the southern Monaro. The coldest air, however, pushed north into western NSW where Broken Hill City recorded a top of 10.1, its coldest day since 10 August 2003.

QLD: Continuing cold and wet in the north. An upper trough across central QLD moved east to the coast today, bringing unseasonably heavy rain to the eastern half of the state and daytime temperatures 6 to 10 below normal. Townsville's top of 18.7 was its lowest since 18.1 was recorded on 8 June 2000. Heavy falls included 40mm between 3 and 9am at Georgetown and 49mm between 6am and 3pm at Woolshed, 35km WSW of Townsville. Cape Tribulation Store in the Daintree recorded 74mm in the 24 hours to 9am Tuesday, most of which fell today. See downpours for more.
