WA: Severe storms in Perth and the South West

Several lines of thunderstorms that moved across the state's southwest early this afternoon brought strong gusty winds and brief torrential rain. Wind gusted to 115 and 111km/h at Capes Naturaliste and Leeuwin, while Busselton Jetty and Rottnest Island recorded 104km/h. Swanbourne, Garden Island, Manjimup and Mandurah all recorded gusts above 90km/h (see highest gusts and highest AWS wind reports). Emergency services responded to 200 calls to property with wind damage. About 2pm, a roof was blown off a four-storey building in Subiaco, 5km west of Perth CBD. Gale force winds caused extensive damage to trees in Kings Park, some of them 75 years old. A groundsman told ABC Radio it was the worst damage he had seen in 30 years, with trees ripped out of the ground, another broken in half and many branches torn down. Waves on the Swan River washed onto the Kwinana Freeway at Como. Western Power said that 21,000 properties lost power during the storm, mostly as a result of wind damage to power infrastructure, with 8,000 still without power late afternoon. Scattered heavy rain fell, giving 24-hour totals of 52.0 at Bickley in the ranges ESE of Perth, 44.8 at Windy Harbour and 36.1 at Pemberton both in the South West. Some of the heavy downpours are listed in downpours below.

VIC: Warm front brings record Otway rain

A relatively warm, moist airmass moved onto the Otway coast overnight dumping a record 62.6mm on Cape Otway Lighthouse, its heaviest July one-day fall in 137 years. 54mm fell between midnight and 6am. Other heavy Otway falls were 50.6 at Weeaproinah and 45.0mm at Apollo Bay. The rain appears to have been associated with a warm front raising the moist airmass ahead of the cold front shown on the surface charts below.
