Noteworthy weather today
significant newsworthy major

WA, NT, QLD, NSW: Extreme cold and wet "dry" season in the north. See story 19 June.

NSW, VIC, QLD, TAS: Storm in teacup as third ECL brings widespread snow, rain and big seas. See story 20 June.

TAS shivers in wintry blast. A cold front moving up from the south crossed TAS overnight, introducing frigid wintry weather across the state. Snow fell as low as 300m, thickly blanketing Hobart's higher suburbs, closing the Lyell Highway between Queenstown and Ouse, and shutting at least two schools for the day. Bitter southerly winds peaked at 106km/h at Maatsuyker Island around midnight with the passage of the front. The alpine weather stations on Hartz Mountains in the southeast and Mt Read in the west recorded their lowest June temperatures in 11 years of operation (-3.0 and -5.2 respectively). During today, Scottsdale's maximum of 7.0 was its lowest for June in 28 years, and the top temperature of 1.9 at Lake Leake set a new all-time record for low maxima for the 18-year-old station.
