WA: Perth fire continues for third day

The fire threatening Perth's outlying southeastern suburbs continued for the third day, having now consumed some 13,000ha (130 square kilometres) mostly of bush and forest land. Temperatures were moderate during today, with the wind varying between S and SW, driving the firefront to the northeast across the upper reaches of the Mundaring Weir into bush, forest and pine plantations. This took pressure off the fire's western flank where settlements around Karragullen, Pickering Brook, Mundaring Weir and Helena Valley had been under threat. Firefighting resources today were divided around the fire's 75km perimeter between protection of the settlements in the west and trying to retard the fire's progress to the northeast, though heavy smoke cover made it difficult for waterbombing aircraft to be of much help in that area.

NT: Intense rain in Darwin

Although the monsoon trough has retreated to the north of Darwin, some small but intense thunderstorms and showers moved rapidly from the east across the area this afternoon. Darwin Airport recorded 5.6mm in 6 minutes to 4.41pm then 23.2mm in the subsequent 8 minutes, a rainfall rate of 174mm/hour.
