NSW: Huge seas take 5 lives

The low pressure system that brought heavy seas to the SE QLD coast earlier in the week has moved to the central Tasman, creating treacherous surf conditions along the NSW coast this weekend. Yesterday, a surfer died at North Cronulla Beach and a sailor died from injuries he received when a 6m wave washed over the bow of a coal ship leaving Newcastle for Mexico. Today, a man collapsed and died after coming out of the surf at Shellharbour south of Wollongong, a Gateshead man died when his dinghy capsized in Swansea Channel south of Newcastle, and a third man drowned when he was swept out to sea on the Central Coast while attempting to rescue two children who subsequently managed to swim to safety.

Most of Sydney's northern beaches and four southern beaches were closed today. Surf lifesavers carried out over 450 rescues during the weekend, including mass rescues at Maroubra where 50 people were swept off a sandbar and 30 at North Cronulla who were caught in a rip. Offshore waverider buoys anong the NSW coast reported 4m swells with significant waves to 6m both yesterday and today.

NSW: Lightning sparks Southern Tablelands fires

Lightning from storms on Friday, Saturday and today was responsible for starting 18 bushfires in the Goulburn area. The largest fire occurred on Saturday and burnt out about 20ha at Frankfield Creek, about 10km E of Gunning.

WA: Ash and humidity black out 10,000 Perth homes

Humidity and a build-up of ash on powerlines and insulators from last week's fires around Perth led to blackouts for over 10,000 properties in northern Perth this morning. The accumulation of soot and ash, made more conductive overnight by high humidity, caused a flashover that resulted in the Yanchep sub-station closing down at 2.45am. About 2,500 properties had not had power restored by 9am. Western Power spokesman Peter Winner told AAP that the company began washing power lines and insulators last week, but had so far concentrated their efforts closer to the fire zone SE of Perth. He said the massive job could take months to complete.
