NSW: Flood peaks move down NW rivers

Flood peaks from earlier rains in QLD and NW NSW are slowly making their way down northwestern river systems. The Namoi at Bugilbone, about halfway between Wee Waa and Walgett, peaked yesterday at 5.2m with minor flooding. The flood peak in the Warrego is approaching Enngonia, 80km N of Bourke, while the Paroo in far NW NSW has been sitting on a peak of 2.4m at Wanaaring for several days, both with minor flooding.

Newsbits
Eastern AUS: Temperatures on the increase
WA: Cold in the South West
QLD: Showers continue on North Coast

Both minimum and maximum temperatures in eastern states notched up a few degrees today, with the anomaly maps at right showing a larger area covered by temperatures 4 to 8 above average. Tidbinbilla in the ACT recorded its highest July maximum in 20 years today with a reading of 16.0. Stations to come within 1C of their July maximum records were Jabiru, Daly Waters, McArthur River Mine, Douglas River and Mango Farm in the NT, Bairnsdale VIC, Wynyard TAS, and, 1,500km down in the Southern Ocean, Macquarie Island. See Hottest for the greatest temperature anomalies.

A cold airmass has entered SW WA, bringing a very cold start to the day and keeping maximum temperatures down 4 to 6 on average (see Coldest). Light offshore breezes helped coastal Cape Naturaliste reach its lowest July minimum of 4.1 in 49 years of record. Wandering recorded the state's lowest minimum of -2.7, while farther east in the Great Southern Lake Grace (-0.8), Narrogin (-1.3) and Pingelly (-0.8) were all within a degee of their record July lows.

Moderate rainfall was again recorded around Tully with totals to 9am of around 40 to 60mm (see Wettest.)
