WA: Trough brings isolated heavy rain

The nearly stationary trough lying down the WA coast and through the South West has brought isolated thunderstorms and some heavy rainfalls. Northam recorded 49.0mm between 3pm yesterday and 9am today, while Gingin Airport 50km N of Perth recorded 25mm in under an hour before 6am. Jacup 90km WSW of Ravensthorpe registered 38.0mm today between noon and 3pm.

AUS: Temperature extremes continue

The high pressure system locked over the southeast continues to give clear skies that promote warm days and cold nights. Gulgong, Bathurst, Cowra and Orange in NSW, Tidbinbilla in the ACT and Balgair in WA all came within 1C of their June maximum temperature records today. The maximum temperature anomaly map at right shows most of the continent again experienced above to well-above average daytime temperatures.

Overnight, clear skies under the high again caused temperatures in the southeast to plummet -- Cooma town's low of -7.4 was 6 below average -- but cloud cover in the vicinity of the trough in WA gave an unusually warm night there, with minima as much as 8 above normal.
