Newsbits

WA: Cold night as high pressure moves in: Clear skies following the recent cold outbreak produced low minimum temperatures over southern WA this morning. Cunderdin (-0.4), Northam (-1.2), Narrogin (0.0), Pingelly (-0.8) and Leonora (1.0) all came within a degree of their August record low in between 33 and 55 years of record. Geraldton and Manjimup recorded 3C, their lowest temperature so far this year. Perth Airport recorded 1.9, but Jandakot with -0.5 was the coldest place in the country relative to average.

SA, NSW, VIC: High minimum temperatures precede change and rain: Much of eastern SA, Western NSW and NW VIC experienced well above average overnight temperatures following a very warm day yesterday. Broken Hill Airport's low of 17.1 was 11.4 above average, while other high minima were Arkaroola (14.6, +10.2) and Menindee (15.2, +10.0) in SA and Mildura Airport (14.9, +9.6) in VIC. The warm night was produced by fresh northwesterlies ahead of a slow-moving change that moved into SA late this morning and crossed VIC and southern NSW during the afternoon and evening. There were scattered reports of 10 to 15mm falling with the front (see the rainfall columns in Noteworthy weather) while Nuriootpa in SA reported a thunderstorm with hail. Strong winds were reported from high level stations ahead of the trough, Thredbo Top Station reporting a gust of 122km/h and Mt Hotham summit 111km/h.
