AUS: High temperatures
continue
Warm nights and days continued across most of the continent as high pressure
prevented any intrusion of colder southern air, except in far SW WA. Overnight,
minimum temperatures were above average continent-wide, except for a few small
coastal pockets. The minimum temperature anomaly map at right shows a broad
area extending from central Australia into western NSW where minima were 8
to nearly 12C above the norm. White Cliffs and Tibooburra NSW both recorded
lows of 16.8: this was 11.6 above average at White Cliffs, and at Tibooburra
was just 0.5 below their 92-year record high June minimum.
A weak cool change that swept across SA and VIC yesterday kept temperatures
in those states out of the record-setting league today, but Griffith NSW equalled
its June maximum record of 25.0 set two days ago while Ali Curung NT set a
new high with 33.3C. Some 24 stations scattered across the NT, SA, NSW and
VIC came within a degree of their records, while in the WA Kimberley Halls
Creek's top of 33.5 was just 0.3C shy of their 59-year June high.
VIC:
First significant rain in 4 months in NW VIC
The first rain of any significance since early February fell across parts
of western and NW VIC overnight, from a rainband ahead of a weakening cold
front. The heaviest totals to 9am were 26.4 at St Arnaud, 24.2 at Trentham,
22.6 at Minyip and 22.0 at Daylesford.
WA:
Low brings gales, rain
SW WA experienced wet windy weather today as a deepening low skirted
its southern coastline. Wind gusted to 113km/h at Cape Leeuwin, 107 at Cape
Naturaliste and 89 at Rottnest Island during the afternoon as the low deepened
to a central pressure of 993hPa just SE of Albany at 10pm. Mount William, in
the ranges 50km SE of Mandurah, recorded 42.4mm in the 24 hours to 9am while
Pickering Brook, Karnet and Mundaring, all SE of Perth, recorded about 36mm.
During the day, Bridgetown registered 30mm between 9am and 9pm. Significantly
colder air swept into the South West, with Bickley in suburban Perth, Pemberton
and Bridgetown only reaching maxima of 12C to 3pm. |
