NSW, VIC, SA: Unusually widespread light rain

The northwest cloudband that gave record July rain in the Pilbara on 10 JUL moved into a complex area of weak troughs and ridges across SE AUS yesterday, diffusing the cloudmass and resulting in unusually widespread and consistent light rainfall. The rain map at right shows how most of NSW and VIC and half of SA recorded between 1 and 10mm to 9am.

The major exception was the southern half of the NSW North West Slopes which recorded 15 to 40mm, most falling between about 3 and 9am today. Tamworth Airport registered 38.0mm, 32 of which fell in the 6 hours to 9am. (Also see Downpours). Ogunbil and Duri, SE of Tamworth, recorded 34.4 and 34.6mm. Boggabri, 100km NW of Tamworth, recorded 39.2. Although thunderstorms developed in NE NSW later in the day, these heavy falls did not appear to be associated with thunder. Flooding of local streams was reported, with a Mazda bus stranded on a causeway 10km S of Werris Creek about 1pm, some time after the rain eased. The bus was winched to safety, the driver commenting that the water "had risen slightly and was flowing a little faster" than when he had safely driven through earlier in the morning.
