TAS: Windy as front brushes the south

Strong winds accompanying frontal passages are nothing exceptional in TAS, but this evening's wind gust of 120km recorded soon after 9pm at Scotts Peak Dam beside Lake Pedder in the South West was unusually high for an inland location. It exceeded the top gusts recorded atop Mt Wellington (115km/h) and Maatsuyker Island (109km/h).

QLD, NT: Cold nights continue in the tropics

As yesterday, exceptionally low minimum temperatures were again recorded across tropical QLD and parts of the NT Top End. Proserpine Airport's low of 6.1 was 10.1 below average, while Weipa Airport's minimum of 15.7 was only 0.5 above its lowest May minimum on record. The minimum temperature anomaly map at right shows the large area of unusual cold, while the actual temperatures map shows that minima below 12C were the norm north to the latitude of Cairns.
