AUS: Heat wanes

Hot air over the continent has been gradually pushed northwards as cool, dry southern air invades the south. However, minima around 30° and maxima in the low 40s were still recorded in the WA Gascoyne and Pilbara today. Nyang Station, 150km SE of Exmouth, recorded its hottest April day in 32 years with a top of 42.6. The station set a new high April minimum temperature yesterday at 29.8 and followed that up with a 27.6 this morning. A number of stations along the WA Kimberley and northwest coast were within a few decimal points of long-time records today: Port Hedland Airport 42.2 (record 42.4 in 57 years), Bidyadanga 42.2 (42.8, 47 years), and Broome Airport 40.6 (41.0, 66 years).

Overnight minima were also high in western NSW where Ivanhoe PO's 21.9 was 11.8 above average. Daytime temperatures in NSW, however, were closer to normal as colder southwesterlies moved into the state.
