NSW: Heavy rain on Mid North Coast

A slow-moving area of heavy rain drifted ashore in the Nambucca Heads - Smoky Cape area of the the Mid North Coast around 6 this morning and maintained intensity while moving only slowly south to southwest. It slowly dissipated in the Port Macquarie area late afternoon. Smoky Cape recorded 70mm between 6 and 9am for a 24-hour total of 88.8. Other heavy 24-hour falls were 60 at Kempsey (town) and 58 at Bowra Sugarloaf. As the rain area moved south, Kempsey Airport recorded a further 33.8mm in 2 hours to 1pm and Port Macquarie Airport registered 34mm between midday and 3pm with local street flooding reported in the Port's industrial area.

The cause of the isolated heavy rain was a near-stationary upper trough over the area coupled with the strong onshore flow set up by a 1037hPa high in the central Tasman Sea.
