NSW: Tornado strikes south of Orange

A tornado struck a fruit-growing area about 10km SW of Orange shortly after 6pm today. Eye-witnesses described it coming down the southern flank of Mt Canobolas to the western end of Giles Road, uprooting trees and pulling down powerlines as it went. It then crossed a farm dam sucking water up from its surface before demolishing two sheds and lifting the roof of a house. A young woman in the house when the roof was torn off was uninjured.

Alex Kelsall told the Central Western Daily that the tornado sounded like a jet engine as it came over the hill. "I was shearing sheep. The storm had already gone over and I heard two loud booms. I saw what I thought was a heap of little birds flying up in the sky but then I realised they were sheets of corrugated iron flying around," he said. "Then I saw this twister coming down the hill and trees going all directions. There was stuff miles up in the air. It was awesome. You could see the funnel forming down." He said it was tearing up objects on a path about 200m wide and moving erratically before moving away towards Spring Hill to the east, then "fizzling out".

Radar and lightning tracker identified a small storm developing over Mt Canobolas around 6pm. One of a number to form west of the divide during the late afternoon, this unimpressive cell moved ESE before dying in the Oberon area soon after 10pm.

NEWSBITS

Somewhat eclipsed by overnight events west of the Divide, Sydney and SE NSW experienced some heavy thunderstorm falls around dawn today. A band of storms extended from Dubbo to the far South Coast at 1am, but although the rainband continued to push east, the storms contracted to the Sydney area and died out around 7am. Many locations in Sydney, the Illawarra, South Coast and Southern Highlands recorded 15 to 30mm in a few hours (see Downpours).

Moist northerlies ahead of the low approaching from under SA brought some heavy rain areas across N and W TAS through the day, only easing late evening when the low moved under TAS and winds swung to the west. Top rainfall totals in the 24 hours to 9am Wednesday were 55.8mm at South Queenstown and 50.0 at Quamby Bluff, south of Deloraine.
