WA: Heat continues through central WA

Whilst it remained warm for April across most of northern AUS, WA experienced well-above average daytime temperatures in a north/south band through the middle of the state. Telfer's high of 40.6 was just 0.6 shy of its 30-year April record, and most stations away from the coast in the East Pilbara and Interior recorded maxima above 40. Roebourne has recorded maxima above 40° on 8 of the past 10 days. Northerly winds swept down to the south coast, giving Ravensthorpe and Esperance tops of 33.0 and 32.0, both around 9 above average.

NSW: Isolated heavy rain at Byron Bay

Very localised heavy rain fell near Byron Bay this afternoon, giving 24-hour to Thursday totals of 104mm at Belongil Creek, 4km W of Cape Byron Lighthouse, and 122mm at Jacaranda Drive, a further 2km west. Showers developed around 9am to the south and east of Ballina, and three substantial cells crossed Byron Bay between about 11am and 3pm. The AWS on Cape Byron recorded 29.0 of its 24-hour total of 30.2 between midday and 3pm, and as radar showed little further activity in the area after 3pm it seems likely that the two 100mm+ totals fell in just a few hours. Only very sparse lightning activity was recorded in the area by lightning trackers, but one downdraft gave the Cape Byron AWS a gust of 102km/h at 12.55pm. In a situation reminiscent of the heavy localised fall at Newcastle on 15 APR, a band of low-level moisture intersected a band of moderate instability over the Ballina/Byron Bay area today. This and convergence reported by local observers seem to account for the very localised heavy showers.
