SA, VIC, NSW: Cold and showery

A weakening trough produced a cool to cold cloudy day across much of the southeast, with showers bringing some useful but isolated falls. Top recordings to 9am were 15.6mm at Robe SA, 24.2 at Lake Nillahcootie VIC (35km S of Benalla) and 24.0 at Ivanhoe PO NSW. Unusually, Hogan Island, about 50km SE of Wilsons Promontory VIC, scored the national top rainfall of 40.2mm.

A cold airmass spread across the southeast following the rain and brought light snow to the Alps and a few flurries to higher parts of the Central Tablelands. Worsening weather on Mt Hotham disoriented two walkers en route to Mt Feathertop. They were rescued mid-afternoon by the Mt Hotham Ski Patrol.

WA, NT, QLD: Continuing warm in the north

Following another warm night across much of the tropics, above average temperature contracted to the Kimberley, Top End and QLD coasts during the day. Extremes were greatest on the QLD central coast where Mackay Met Office recorded its warmest July day in 19 years of record with a reading of 28.5. Minima in the area were 7 to 9 above average, with Collinsville recording 18.6 and Moranbah 17.0.
