QLD: Hot weather continues on North Coast

Lucinda Point AWS, 95km NNW of Townsville, recorded its highest temperature in the 15 years that it has been operating today with a reading of 36.6. Temperatures in tropical coastal areas of Australia seldom vary greatly from the average, and the Lucinda Point record is a mere 6.4° above the norm, however the high humidity levels normal in coastal locations would have made it feel much hotter.

The QLD North Coast, particularly in the area around Townsville, has had a long run of above average temperatures. Townsville Airport has not had a below average maximum since 27 January - a run of 15 days -- and the average for the month so far of 34.3 is 3.3 above the norm and equal to the record monthly mean maximum for February set in 1990 in 64 years of record.

NSW, VIC: A cold start to February

At the other end of the scale, the NSW Riverina and southern South West Slopes and the VIC Northern Country and North East have experienced average maximum temperatures way below average so far in February due to persistent cloud cover combined with a generally cold airmass over SE AUS. In NSW, Corowa's average maximum for the first 11 days of the month has been 23.6, 7.7 below the February average. In VIC, Benalla, Dartmouth, Rutherglen, Strathbogie and Wangaratta are all running at 7.0° or more below the February average. And all this in spite of a scorcher on the first day of the month when temperatures were in the high 30s.
