QLD, NSW: Rain moves southeast

Multi-centred low pressure systems on the QLD Central Coast moved SE down the coast today, contracting rain into the state's southeast and the northern NSW coast. By 10pm, a single-centred low of 1004hPa was located just east of the Gold Coast, moving south.

Heavy falls that continued yesterday in the Warrego and Maranoa, and on the Central Coast, make up the heaviest totals in today's 24 hour rainlist, and were described in yesterday's Daily Weather Summary. The rain area contracted south of Bundaberg, stretching as far west as the Darling Downs during the morning and had cleared QLD by mid afternoon. However, a band of storms that developed on the western Darling Downs mid afternoon gave some further moderate falls as it moved eastwards to cross the coast mid evening. Bundaberg recorded 34.0mm in 3 hours to 3pm and Miles 20.2 in the hour to 8pm.

Unfortunately, despite good rains in an arc from the Central Coast to the Maranoa and Warrego, falls from this system in SE QLD have been patchy, reaching 20 to 30mm at best. Consequently, 13 local councils in the region will proceed with uniform water restrictions from Friday following a drop in southeastern dam levels to an average of 40.4 per cent.

On the NSW coast, the rain area that hovered north of Lismore most of yesterday extended down the coast late last night and heavy showers and thunderstorms reached Newcastle soon before dawn. Williamtown RAAF recorded 56.0mm between 6 and 9am, 33.0 of which fell in 30 minutes to 8am. Other heavy falls are in downpours below. A cluster of heavy showers that passed across Sydney's northern suburbs mid-afternoon gave Turramurra 44mm midday to 9pm, Frenchs Forest 31mm midday to 6pm and Baulkham Hills 25mm 6 to 9pm. Manly Dam received 29.0mm in 30 minutes from 2pm.
