SE AUS: Record heat, bushfires as winter warmth continues

A further 33 heat records fell or were equalled today as a broad and unseasonably hot airmass contracted east ahead of a rainband and cooler change. In SA, over 20 bush and grass fires brought over 600 firefighters into action.

The heatwave appears to be the most intense and extensive for June since 1957. Of the stations with computerised records that go back that far, only Broken Hill today and Kyancutta and Adelaide Airport yesterday set new highs. However, the temperatures in this event came close to those in 1957: Adelaide Kent Town's 25.4 fell 0.2 shy of the West Terrace site record, Melbourne City's 25.3 was just 0.1 off the 150 year high and Canberra was similarly 0.1 short of the 66 year high -- all three were set in 1957. Other notable near-misses were Robe 20.1 (record 20.4 in 120 years), Nhill 24.0 (25.0, 103 years), East Sale 23.0 (23.2, 60 years), and Flinders Island 19.7 (20.3, 43 years). In SA, NSW and VIC, 13 locations broke their June high maximum temperature records for the second day in a row. Full details are in records below.

Rain early this afternoon helped over 600 firefighters contain over 20 grass and bushfires across the eastern parts of SA. The worst, a 10 hectare blaze near Mylor in the Adelaide Hills 20km SE of Adelaide, burnt out a shed and threatened homes late morning before the rain arrived. All are believed to have been private burn-offs that got out of control in the strong winds preceding the front.

TAS: Fogs widespread

Fogs were widespread across TAS this morning. Warm, moist northerlies moving across cold water produced sea fogs in the southeast, with Cape Bruny and Geeveston still reporting visibility of 100m at 9am. Inland, radiation fog was widespread. At Launceston Airport, flights were delayed until mid-morning for the second morning in a row.
