Newsbits

QLD: Chilly night: Minimum temperatures across a large area of QLD were 6 to 10 below the norm this morning, with Coolangatta Airport recording its lowest September minimum in 14 years with a reading of 5.6C. Locations as far apart as Mt Isa, Proserpine, Gympie, Dalby and Oakey registered minima 8 or 9 below average.

NSW: Bushfires blaze around Tenterfield: Despite recent cold weather, two bushfires NE of Tenterfield have kept 8 crews of volunteer firefighters and 3 water-bombing helicopters busy over the past few days. The larger, which had burnt through about 2,000ha over the past week, was on private property at Boorook, 40km NE of the town, while a second blaze was located in rugged terrain at Paddy's Flat 10km farther east. Rural Fire Service Northern Tablelands Zone Manager Superintendent Matt Inwood said "The temperatures are not that high, however we have been experiencing winds of up to 70 km/hr and in the current dry conditions this fire is proving very difficult to control."
