SE AUS: Widespread frosts before a very warm day

Temperature ranges were unusually large across parts of SE AUS today. Fingal in NE TAS had the unusual distinction of being both the third coldest and third warmest place in the continent, relative to normal, with a minimum of -5.9 (7.0 below average) and a maximum of 20.7 (7.9 above). This maximum was 1.1 higher than any June maximum in Fingal's 19-year computerised record, while nearby Lake Leake also set a new June high with a top of 15.4. Orange, Tidbinbilla and Charlotte Pass NSW, Mt Buller VIC and Scottsdale, Launceston City and Powranna TAS all came within a degree of their June records.

Frost level minima (2C and lower) were experienced across a large area of NSW, VIC and TAS, and extended into parts of SA, the area around Alice Springs and the southern QLD highlands (see the Actual minimum temperatures map at right). Wangaratta's low of -4.8 was just 0.8 shy of a June record and -2.0 at Watarrka, 250km WSW of Alice Springs was 9.5 below the norm.

QLD: Isolated heavy showers around Tully

A patch of heavy showers drifted across the coast near Tully overnight giving some heavy falls, mainly between 9pm and 3am. Bulgun Creek flood network raingauge, just north of the town, recorded 82mm in the 6 hours for a 24 hour to 9am total of 90mm. Jarra Creek, west of Tully, registered 44mm between midnight and 3am, while in Tully itself the flood network gauge reported 54mm 9pm to 3am.
