WA, SA: Heat continues

High daytime temperatures were again a feature across much of the continent, with overnight minima also creeping up in the west. If you click the actual temperatures link for maxima on the right, you'll see that very little of the continent was spared top temperatures below 36 today, with most of WA, southern SA and SW QLD over 39. A band of maximum temperatures 8 to 12 above normal stretched from central WA to SA's Eyre Peninsula, with the highest readings in the WA Goldfields. Here, Leinster reported a top of 46.5, the highest temperature recorded in the short 10 years there's been an AWS at the airport. The station also nearly had its hottest night in 10 years, with a minimum of 32.9, just 0.2 below the record. For other high temperatures see hottest below and the state extremes page.

WA: Widespread thunderstorms in the south

Moist northwesterlies feeding into an inland trough brought widespread showers and thunderstorms to southern WA overnight and through daylight hours today. At Albany Airport, storms were reported at every observation from 9am to 6pm, and 39mm was recorded between 6am and 6pm. Rocky Gully, 90km WNW of Albany, registered 37.2mm in 4 hours to 1pm. In the 24 hours to 9am Tuesday, the heaviest totals -- all or most of which fell in the storms today -- were 39.2 at King River, 10km NE of Albany, and 37.6 at Narrikup West, 30km NW of the City.
