QLD: Storms black out the Southeast

A line of storms developed mid afternoon from Warwick to Kingaroy and moved ENE, though they also back-built over the Toowoomba area resulting in prolonged thunderstorm activity there. Toowoomba Airport recorded the strongest wind in this event with a gust of 91km/h at 7.45pm. The main cells in the south generated substantial electrical activity on their eastern flank between 3 and 5pm as they moved across the eastern Downs and into the Ipswich area. Electrical activity then stopped suddenly, but from 5pm until late evening areas of heavy rain continued to move NE across Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast.

Over 16,000 properties mainly to the west and north of Brisbane lost power due to downed powerlines and lightning strikes. 7,639 properties lost power in Ipswich, 1,892 in the Lockyer Valley to the NW of Ipswich, and 1,861 in Redcliffe and Caboolture. Over 3,000 were still without power next morning. There were press reports of golfball-sized hail. The SES attended 8 callouts, mostly to the west of Brisbane for house damage caused by fallen trees or branches.

QLD: Heavy rain around Cairns

A weak low in the monsoon trough over Cape York Peninsula continued to move slowly south today producing a small area of very heavy rain around and north of Cairns. Moist onshore winds feeding into the Great Dividing Range, which rises to over 1300m just 14km inland from the coast at Mossman, gave that town 285mm and nearby Daintree Village 252mm for the 24 hours to 9am. Cairns recorded only 59.8mm at the airport in the same time, but made up for it during the day with 80mm fallling between 9am and 3pm.
