QLD: Rain develops after a stifling night

Coastal moisture has been carried into inland QLD on easterly winds over the past couple of days, gradually building up over central areas. Meanwhile, a broad upper trough and the entrance to a jet stream aloft have been gently increasing uplift over the area so that cloud cover has increased and a surface trough began to deepen today. The blanketing effect of the cloud produced an unusually warm night with minima in the high teens and low 20s, 6 to 10 above normal coupled with humidities of 80 to 90%.

After moderate overnight rainfalls of 40 to 60mm in the Mackay area, more general rain began falling from the Gulf Country through the Central West this afternoon and evening. Winton recorded 19mm 9am to 3pm, Longreach 45 and Julia Creek 22 3pm to 9pm, and Blackall 21mm 6pm to 9pm.

TAS: Windy in the south

A persistent westerly stream has kept average winds high in exposed parts of southern TAS. Maastuyker Island notched up a wind run of 3,922km for the 48 hours to 9am Wednesday, an average speed of 81.7km/h. The highest gusts recorded today were 128km/h atop Mt Wellington and 115km/h at Maatsuyker. Despite the wind and the passage of weak fronts, temperatures have remained mild, especially in the east and at night. Hobart's temperature range today was from 12.5 to 17.5, 5.6 and 3.1 above average.
