WA, QLD, NSW: Hot again in parts

Thargomindah in far SW QLD experienced its hottest March day in nearly half a century for the second day in a row today as early Autumn heat continued in central NSW, SW QLD and the WA Gascoyne region. The town's previous March record of 42.8 in 47 years of computerised observations was broken yesterday with a maximum of 43.0, while the mercury rose to 44.4 today. Birdsville reached 43.6 while in NSW Bourke reached 42.0, Nyngan 40.4 and Wanaaring 40.0. The area of heat was not as great today as yesterday as a slowing trough pushed cooler air into southeastern states.

In WA, the West Gascoyne experienced an uncomfortably hot night and a scorcher of a day. Nyang's minimum of 31.5 has only been exceeded twice before, in 1973 and 1980. Carnarvon had its hottest March day since 1980 with a top of 43.8, 12.4 above normal.

NT, QLD: Storms, heavy showers in the north

Although the surface charts above show the monsoon trough lying north of the continent, there have been some heavy thunderstorms and showers across the NT Top End and around the Gulf of Carpentaria in moist unstable air south of the trough. Among the heavier downpours listed below was 13.6mm in just 8 minutes at Dum In Mirrie, 50km WSW of Darwin, this evening.
