AUS: Area of heat contracts

The temperature maps at right show a general contraction of the enormous area of hot air over the continent as cooler southern air invaded WA behind a cool change and southeasterly trade winds in QLD pushed inland. It was still hot enough, however, to give many locations in NW WA minimum temperatures close to 30°, and Learmonth equalled its April record maximum of 41.4 in 31 years of record. Marble Bar and Pannawonica exceeded 42°, and both came within half a degree of the record. Maxima also pushed well into the 30s in eastern SA and western VIC and NSW, with readings 10 or 11 above average.

NSW: Fires break out in hot conditions

Four bushfires broke out in the Central West today. The largest burnt out about 120ha near Carcoar Dam, and others occurred near Orange, Blayney and Cowra. All are believed to have started from burning-off operations.
