VIC: Strong winds cause fire and boating problems

Winds strengthened with the passage of a front across VIC today. A canoeist was missing, believed drowned, at Loch Sport on Lake Victoria south of Bairnsdale. The canoe capsized in choppy water. A woman and child swam for two hours to shore using an esky lid for flotation, but the man had not been found after a week's search.

Three private burn-offs blazed out of control in gusty winds around Ballarat. A grassfire burnt through 50ha near Clunes during the afternoon and two other small grassfires were fought at Clunes and Haddon. 250 firefighters continue to fight, monitor and mop up the Wilsons Promontory fire which had died down today, though hotspots continued on the Wilson Range in the south and around Titania Creek near Tidal River. A 12km firebreak is being built across the isthmus that connects the Prom to the mainland to contain the fire, which has burnt through about 7,000ha.

WA: Hot in the west

Maximum temperatures were 8 to 11 above average along the west coast and a small area of the Gascoyne today. Medina, 30km south of Perth, recorded it highest April temperature in its 22 year history with a top of 36.5, 10.8 above normal. Perth Airport's 35.6 was 10.1 up on average.
