Newsbits

TAS: Unusually localised heavy rain on Tasman Peninsula: The low pressure area that brought flood rain to eastern TAS on Monday 12 September loitered to the east of the state until moving only very slowly away to the east today. Heavy showers in the southerly airstream it has generated across TAS have clipped the east and southeast coasts, giving totals of 10 to 20mm over the 2 days to 9am to coastal locations and less than 10mm farther inland. However, Premaydena, 10km NW of Port Arthur, recorded 87.0mm for the period (33.6 yesterday and 53.4 today), while Tasman Island, 15km SE of Port Arthur, recorded 57.6 (16.4 and 41.2). Premaydena has recorded 203.6mm in the past 5 days. In the station's 100-year record, the wettest monthly total for September has been 130.3mm in 1953, while only 10 monthly totals have exceeded 200mm.
