WA: Widespread heavy rain in the South West

A very moist airstream ducting southeastwards ahead of an active cold front gave falls of from 25 to over 100mm southwest of a line from about Jurien to Bremer Bay. A broad rainband moved into the South West mid morning, and rain continued until the arrival of the cold front late evening or early Thursday morning. Falls of 50mm or more are listed in wettest for 19 May.

The heaviest falls of 65 to 75mm were in an arc from east to south of Perth, while gaugings above 50mm were the norm from north of Perth to south of Bunbury and east into the ranges. Brunswick Junction, 20km ENE of Bunbury, topscored with 111.0mm. Gosnells City, with 69.6mm, recorded its wettest May day in 37 years, while Pearce RAAF (49.0mm) and Jandakot Airport (65.8) both came within a few millimetres of their May records.

The rain comes on top of heavy storm falls on 16 MAY, bringing totals for the week to 9am Thursday to between 100 and 175mm for much of the Perth to Bunbury area. The highest were:

177.2 BUSSELTON AERO
174.6 ACTON PARK
173.6 BRUNSWICK JUNCTION
172.8 BUSSELTON SHIRE
169.8 WOKALUP
155 BUSSELTON
148.2 SHANNON
147 HAPPY VALLEY
143.2 LUDLOW
142.2 HARVEY
138.4 COLLIE EAST
137.8 JARRAHWOOD
134 ROLEYSTONE
134 PAYNEDALE
132.6 MARGARET RIVER
132 NANNUP

There were 140 SES callouts in the Perth metro area, mostly for leaking roofs, and the rain caused further misery to those still making repairs or without electricity following the 16 May storms. It was feared that strong winds may accompany this cold front, but, apart from a gust of 98kmm/h late evening at Ocean Reef off Perth's northern suburbs, there were no reports of damaging winds.

The Blackwood River, which drains much of the inland areas of the South West, was reported in its middle reaches to be at its highest level since 1993.
