WA: Mild tsunami brings tidal fluctuations

A magnitude 8.7 earthquake epicentred 10km below the sea floor 250km west of Banda Aceh, Indonesia, soon after midnight WST today caused only minor tidal fluctuations on the WA coast. Dr Mark Leonard of Geoscience Australia told AAP that two small waves of 10cm and 12cm swept down the WA coast, reaching Perth at about 8.20am WST. These followed a 23cm tsunami wave recorded at 2.35am WST at the Cocos Islands. Tidal changes up to half a metre were reported at Penguin Island offshore from Rockingham south of Perth. Waves of 20 to 30cm were reported in Geraldton Harbour and a 10cm tidal anomaly was observed at Hillarys, 20km north along the coast from Perth.

NSW: Bushfire threatens Tamworth homes

A bushfire threatened homes in the Tullamore Heights estate near Loomberah, SE of Tamworth today. Although it only burnt out 1 hectare, it took the combined efforts of three brigades to bring under control. Dry conditions in the Moree Plains, Narrabri and Gwydir local government areas have resulted in an extension of the bushfire period to 30 April.

TAS: Burnoff generates spectacular pyrocumulus

A forest regeneration burn conducted in the Huon Valley SW of Hobart produced a spectacular plume of smoke on the city's western skyline today. Intense heat from the fires generated mushrooming pyrocumulus clouds on top of the plume.
