NSW, S QLD: Heat and dust ahead of trough

High maximum temperatures were again recorded across most of NSW and far southern QLD ahead of a trough that moved into SW NSW this morning. Sydney and Wollongong were the hottest places in the nation compared to average -- Sydney Airport's top of 39.4 was 13.1 up on average while Wollongong University's 38.5 was up 12.9. Temperatures in NW NSW, SW QLD and NE SA all topped 44C, with highest state readings of 45.3 at Thargomindah, 44.5 at Tibooburra PO and 45.0 at Moomba.

The trough whipped up dust as it moved through NW NSW late afternoon and evening, and a thick dust haze was transported east through Narrabri, Gunnedah and Tamworth to the Upper Hunter. This mixed with overnight moisture to leave a light brown film over cars that was a common talking point in the area on Wednesday morning.

NW QLD, NE NT: Minor flooding and gusty winds as ex-Cyclone Hervey moves inland.

The remnants of TC Hervey brought minor flooding to low-lying areas of the Roper-McArthur district of the NT today, and in particular to the Robinson River near Borroloola. Rain from the former cyclone appears to have been patchy, with heavy falls missing the Bureau's sparse raingauge network in this area. The top official falls to 9am were only 64.2 at McArthur River Mine and 62.6 at Borroloola. By late this evening, the ex-cyclone had been absorbed into the monsoon trough over QLD. An isolated high wind gust of 141km/h reported from Trepell Airport, 160km NE of Boulia at 5.30pm may have been associated with the decaying cyclone or locally strong winds around a thunderstorm.

VIC, TAS: Windy and showery as front passes

Storm force winds and brief heavy showers accompanied the passage of a front across TAS and southern VIC today. Wind gusted to 117km/h at Maatsuyker Island and 111km/h atop Mt Wellington, while Melbourne City registered 17mm of rain between 9am and noon.
