VIC, TAS: Wintry and windy

The front sweeping across VIC and TAS on the 10am surface chart above brought strong winds and hail showers to the two states, and more snow to the VIC Alps. A succession of fronts in a mobile westerly stream has topped up snow depths at VIC resorts by 20 to 30cm since the weekend, with around 10cm accumulating last night. The front brought scattered reports of hail showers across the state, with weather stations at Weeaproinah in the Otways and Castlemaine reporting hail and Gabo Island reporting hail and a wintry thunderstorm. Wind gusted to 109km at Cape Grim and 98km/h atop Mt Reid in TAS, 100km/h on Mt Gellibrand and 93k/h at Geelong Airport in VIC, and 106km/h on Hogan Island in Bass Strait.

NT, WA: Temperature contrasts breed violent storms

While a cool airmass continued to give below average temperatures across the south of the continent today, above average temperatures persisted in the tropics, especially in the NT. At the rubbing point between the airmasses, thunderstorms developed in the southern NT. One, at Territory Grape Farm 140km N of Alice Springs, delivered a wind gust of 130km/h and dumped 27.6mm in 12 minutes to 2.31pm for a storm total of 40.0mm giving the farm its wettest September day in its 16 years of existence. The wind averaged 104km/h for 10 minutes from 2.15 to 2.25pm.

Balgair on the western edge of the Nullarbor Plain in WA equalled its coldest September night in 22 years of record while Timber Creek in NW NT came within 0.5C of its record high September minimum in 24 years.
