TAS, VIC: Wintry weather follows front

TAS and southern VIC experienced gale force winds this morning in the wake of last night's cold change, while extensive snow fell in TAS. In northern Bass Strait, the highest wind gusts recorded were 137km/h at Wilsons Promontory about 4am, 128 at Hogan Island just after midnight and 109 just before 7am on Kingfish B Oil Rig offshore from Sale. Tasman Island, off the TAS SE coast, recorded a top gust of 117km/h about 5am.

Liawenee on the central TAS Great Lake reported 5cm snow cover at 9am, while Mt Wellington behind Hobart and Ben Lomond in the northeast highlands were both coated with snow. The snow and earlier rain were welcomed by Hydro Tasmania, whose dams are at less than 25% capacity, threatening power cuts for Tasmanians by December if they are not boosted by winter precipitation. Great Lake, one of the largest impoundments, is at 16% of capacity, with water even below the lowest level of boat launching ramps. The Hydro said 20 to 30mm had been received across its main catchments during the weekend's rain and snow. The top reports for the 24 hours to 9am from Bureau stations were 31.6 at Quamby Bluff near Deloraine and 22.6 at Scotts Peak Dam in the South West.

In VIC, frosty conditions following rain created black ice problems in the Ballan to Ballarat area this morning with four crashes reported. Three motorcyclists were rescued on Monday morning on the Mt Skeyne Road north of Licola in West Gippsland after becoming stuck in snow today. Police are warning that many high country roads that are normally accessible are covered in snow.

Newsbits
WA: Cold in the South West

Minimum temperatures in SW WA were up to 7C below average this morning as high pressure led to overnight calms and clear skies. Jarrahwood, 35km ESE of Busselton, has an average July minimum of 5.0C, but recorded -2.0 this morning, its eighth sub-zero reading in the past 11 days. Close to the sea, Bunbury recorded a low of -0.5.
