NSW: Moderate to heavy rain on northern half of coast

A low off the QLD Gold Coast moved slowly SSE and deepened slightly during the day to lie about 200km E of the NSW Mid North Coast at 10pm with a central pressure of 998hPa. Cloud wrapping around the southern side of the low brought showers and some broader rain areas onto the coast from around Sydney to the far North Coast. The heaviest totals for the 24 hours to 9am were around Coffs Harbour, where the airport measured 126.8mm and flood warning gauges measured 114mm at Perry Drive, 112 at Shephard's Lane and 100 at Red Hill. In this area, the rain fell fairly consistently through the 24-hour period, with 3-hourly totals at the airport of 10, 19, 20, 9, 11, 20, 36 and 2mm between 9am yesterday and 9am today. Yamba recorded 94.4 for the 24 hours and there were general falls of 25 to 60mm southwards along the coast and east-facing slopes on the ranges from the Clarence to the NE Hunter.

During the day, the strong southeasterly stream continued to push rain with scattered embedded thunderstorms into an area from about Nelson Bay to Wauchope, including the Comboyne Plateau. Radar showed some particularly heavy lines of showers developing along convergence lines parallel to the flow, and locations under these received the heaviest 24-hour totals to 9am Saturday. Of the official gauges, only Wauchope town with 99.6mm and Lorne 90.0 exceeded 60mm, but flood gauges with heavy 24-hour totals included Redoak 87, Logans Crossing 85, Laurieton 76 and Comboyne 73mm. All these locations are on the eastern side or flanks of the Comboyne Plateau.

WA: Showers build good start to wet season

Persistent northwesterly rainbands and frontal showers have brought significant rain to much of southern WA since the beginning of the month. Large areas have already received or exceeded their average May rainfall. Heavy showers in the South West over the past few days have helped nudge these totals along; Busselton Aero recorded 25.8mm in the hour to 11 this morning. A brace of stations recorded totals over 25mm in the 24 hours to 9am yesterday in the Central West , and the same occurred today in the Gascoyne and Murchison.
