NT: Torrential thunderstorm falls in central Top End

A 100km-long line of thunderstorms, which developed shortly after midnight to the south of Katherine, gave some torrential pre-wet season downpours as they moved to the northwest over the next 10 or so hours. The storms developed in a broad trough (not shown on the surface chart above) lying from the WA Pilbara through the NT Top End into central QLD. The heaviest falls were around Katherine and for about 150km to the northwest. At Tindal RAAF Base, 15km SE of Katherine, 86.8mm fell in the hour to 1.30am with 32.8mm falling in the 10 minutes to 1am. Dorisvale, 100km W of Katherine, recorded 83.0mm and Douglas River, 150km NW of Katherine, registered 70.8 for the 24 hours to 9am, though most rain would have fallen in an hour or so. Scattered thunderstorms with some heavy falls redeveloped late in the afternoon farther north across the Top End.

See Downpours and Wettest for today and Sunday for further details.

NSW: Drought eases as Lake George begins to fill

Figures issued by the NSW Department of Primary Industry today showed a dramatic improvement in the drought situation across the state in the month to the beginning of November. The drought-declared area shrank from 38% to 27% while the marginally affected area was reduced from 49 to 40%. 33% of the state was in a "satisfactory" situation at the beginning of November compared to just 13% a month previously. Since the figures were issued, a further 25 to 100mm has been recorded across most of the state except the north west.

A sign of the easing conditions is that Lake George near Canberra is the fullest it has been for at least 8 years, with local estimates that it is about 5% full. This area of inland drainage is like a barometer of the area's dryness or wetness, with the lake filling when rainfall exceeds evaporation and drying when the reverse occurs. During the relatively wet 1950s to 1970s, it was full or close to full, though at its fullest it is at most about 2.5m deep. During the droughty 1940s it was dry for about 10 years, and has seen little standing water since 2001.
