TAS: Strong winds lash state again

A cold front that crossed TAS late this morning ushered in another period of gale to storm force westerlies across the island. Wind gusted to 128km/h at Maatsuyker Island, which also tallied a 24-hour wind run of 2058km for the 24 hours to 9am Thursday, or an average speed of 85.8km/h! Other high wind gusts were 107km/h at Scotts Peak Dam, 104 at Tasman Island and Strahan, and 102 at Cape Grim and Mt Read.

SA, NSW: Hot conditions move east

Well above average temperatures moved into NW NSW today and continued in NE SA. In SA, maximum temperatures were 40 or 41C at all centres in the northeast, peaking with 41.2 at Coober Pedy. Woomera's 39.3 was 13.3 above average. The hot day followed a warm night. Marla, a truck stop on the Stuart Highway 150km south of the NT/SA border recorded a minimum of 26.0, 11.9 above normal. In NSW, maxima topped the old century in the northwest, with Menindee the highest on 39.0, 12.6 up on average. Broken Hill Airport's top of 36.8 was just 0.6 below its hottest October day in 14 years of record.

NEWSBITS

Cool, blustery conditions developed in SW WA as an upper cold pool and surface low pressure system moved into the state. A late afternoon rain area gave many centres around 10 to 20 mm in a few hours, while minimum and maximum temperatures were 2 to 8 below normal.
