Heavy rain in northern WA, NT as Low deepens

Flood rainfall continues to fall in the WA Kimberley region where many centres have recorded between 150 and 300mm in the past few days. The monsoonal low that tracked across the Kimberley crossed the coast north of Broome this morning, its pressure dropping slightly to 995hPa. Highest falls in the 24 hours to 9am were 105.6mm at Ord River Dam south of Kununurra and 105.0 at Cygnet Bay northwest of Derby. In the week ended 9am Saturday 3 January, Ord River Dam recorded 348.4mm and Kachana, 110km SSW of Wyndham, 278.8.

The monsoon trough lies eastwards across the north of the NT Top End where heavy falls and some thunderstorms continue. Top fall to 9am was 127mm at Mary River Rangers Station, 60km ENE of Pine Creek. In the week to 9am Saturday, Mataranka Station, 150km north of Daly Waters, recorded 281.0.mm. Flood levels increased to moderate in central reaches of the Daly River today.

Widespread heat continues in the south

The extent of the heatwave gripping the nation is shown in the maps at right. Once again today, top temperatures were in the mid to high 40s in SA, NSW, QLD, NT and WA with maxima of 48.0 at Marree, 44.6 at Tibooburra, 46.7 at Birdsville, 44.1 at Yulara and 46.0 at Leonora.

Isolated severe storm in SE NSW

An isolated but intense thunderstorm developed in SE NSW during the early evening, becoming severe around 8pm. It occurred in remote country near Ingebyra, 30km SSW of Jindabyne and no damage was reported. It appears, however, to have been a good example of an isolated pulse storm, and is described in detail on Australian Sky & Weather. In Grenfell, the SES were called to a house in Bradley Street, where what was described as a "whirlwind" had lifted the rear patio roof placing it upside-down on the roof of the home, with a section of it landing on a vehicle parked underneath.
