Warm in western WA before rain moves in

Warm in western WA before rain moves in

Four substantial records for June heat fell in WA today as an approaching cold front ducted warm and quite moist northwesterlies across the southwestern half of the state. In the Wheat Belt and Great Southern, Katanning, Narrogin, Pingelly and Wagin shaved nearly one degree off their June maximum temperature records which range in length from 30 to 47 years. Farther north, Denham, 110km S of Carnarvon, also set a new 16 year record. Top temperatures were between 4 and 8° over the norm across the whole state west of a line from about Carnarvon to Esperance.

The cold front undercutting such warm moist air produced some heavy rain (see downpours below). Windy Harbour on the South Coast recorded 35mm between 6am and noon while Cape Leeuwin registered 15.4mm in just 30 minutes after 9am. The heaviest falls for the 24 hours to 9am Thursday, most of which fell today, were 42.8 at Mt William firetower (a new rain station building a reputation for WA wetness), 41.4 at the Karri Valley Resort, 35km SW of Manjimup, and 38 at Margaret River.
